Hey can anyone tell me why Carlsen had to sacrifice his rook on move 24? Move 23 seems to be the critical position in the game, but I can't see why he couldn't just play a move like pawn takes E4, or maybe further defending the knight with Rook to E1. Or was that just a sacrifice to open up Teimour's kingside?
I think you mean fxe5? If fxe5 then Bxe5 and the rook still dies. It was actually the second choice from the computers and a good practical choice to sac the rook for activity, squares and a pawn. He needed to get some active defense and he tried but it was not enough. Magnus is just playing weak for his standard right now.
