the 2400s have a hard enough time making money solely off of chess, start there then go to the 850s eventually
+1
Why would anyone with fantastic ideas of how to monetize chess post those ideas to a public chess forum? For chess to become a big deal, it must be pushed as part of popular culture, with solid financial backing from corporate and media entities. Those folks won't push anything unless there is money there for all. I don't think you are going to see stadiums full of chess fans cheering for their favorite players nor will you see chess players doing shows in Vegas. Chess is a board game, yes a great one, but it is not something that moves popular culture.
If you have mad programming skills, are a chess buff and have an understanding of IOT, enjoy.
So, for the longest time I have been obsessed with a fundamentally radical idea: earnings based on chess skill/ expertise across the whole spectrum, not just for the elite, or the celebrity writers or bloggers but for players. The challenges of bringing to life such a idea are legion. Luckily overtime, ingenious solutions have been found in the wake of the tech advancements. This thread, is to help push myself and any other imagineers to the next level.
For the record, I'm assuming that this will end up being an unworkable scheme. At any rate, if you're going to use IOT as a part of your idea, at least ensure that you build internet security into your design. There's already far too much insecure IOT stuff on the internet.
You could sell mousepads that generate energy when the mouse is moved while people are playing online.
Otherwise I'm completely out of ideas how you'd monetize the chess-skills (or lack therof) of low-ratings players.
@NikkilikeChikki you speak truth, and define the totality of the problem to which we address overselves!! (+4.5). I believe @Moonwarrior_1 was underscoring your observation albeit tongue in cheek. Chess themed sweaters?! (-5.0)
@Pat_Zurr 1.Before there was google there was Netscape, before there was Facebook there was Hi5 and Myspace. The vanguard that breaks through the threshold and creates the space where possibility and opportunity abound, very rarely benefit from their endeavour. 2. I am resident in Uganda, Africa, where graveyards brim with the most brilliant of ideas for lack of resources. So without external collaboration I consign this "fanatic" idea to that same fate.
I do concur with you, "For chess to become a big deal, it must be pushed as part of popular culture, with solid financial backing from corporate and media entities." We live in an age (the popular culture) where our attention and personal data have become tradable commodities, and I think therein lies the salvation for chess in this economic regard. However to realise that salvation, the necessary space has to be constructed from scratch (hence the mad programming skills) prioritising the economic remuneration, fair play, and internet security as EscherehcsE (clever palindrome btw) pointed out.
@EscerehcsE, I may not share your enthusiasm wrt the workability of this scheme however you hit on the nose. Blockchain technologies (bitcoins and such) would have to be at the heart of this construction.
@danielaKay your jibe aside, when two players both rated say 850 and 876 do battle the result is W/L/D with a change in rating. This change in rating can be translated into a gain or loss on the players "digital purse" which I believe is reward for their skill at that level of play
Before this construct can be attempted, one has to first fantasize about it, something am sure like me, you all do albeit unconsciously, only we call it visualisation. Its from that mental image that we start to work out the moves that would change this current state into something closer to that held in our minds. So allow yourselves to fantasize within the bounds of what is possible technologically.
From my mental image the biggest challenges would be one of fair play seeing as there is now an economic incentive to cheat. How do I ensure my opponent is not engine assisted. Are my winnings safe and will the financial obligation they entail be honoured?
All useful criticism, observations ideas are very welcome
