Can someone explain to me how to explain to my son when you should castle queen side versus King side. I am a learner as well and wasn't sure how to explain it to my son. Apparently he got into a heated discussion with his friend over it. He understands the concept of casting asap to protect the king but he get a confused as to which way to go.

usually, castling king side is the safer way to go

Q side leaves the Rook Pawn unguarded. Sorry, the a pawn.

You usually follow up with either Kb1 (White) or Kb8 (Black) so it doesn't really matter.

Correct. My point is that the extra King move loses a tempo.

That being said, Q side castling sometimes is the best option for reasons of safety or potential for attack, as thr Q Rook points down a central file.
