During a recent over the board, I postponed castling until the late middlegame. Good thing, because castling put my opponent in check (with the took of course). Their game fell apart and I won 3 moves later. How rare is this, castling in order to check? I've never seen it happen. My opponent was dismayed, couldn't believe it.
I do this very often actually, it works best when you castle queenside because it brings your rook very quickly into the game and there's no pawn in front of it, the downside is that castling queenside is not as safe as castling kingside. I wait a good moment before I castle because usually I try to take my opponents ability to castle (with my Knight for example and therefore making my opponent move his king) which comes in perfect when I castle and badum tss! Check! What follows is one of the moments where I am really strong and where I can usually easily invade the opponents "camp".
