There's a tab in live chess window that says "friends." It's next to "Alerts," which is open by default. Click the friends tab to see your currently live friends. you can challenge them from this tab.
Challenging friends for a Live match!

Hello, my name is Dennis and I have a question about being able to challenge friends.
If I click on a friend I can challenge him or her, but only for an Online Chess match. Now, I don't like Online games that much, so I wanted to find out if I can challenge friends for a Live game - however, I found out that, even if the friend I want to challenge is online at the moment, I cannot challenge them for a Live game! Why in the world is that? How CAN I play a Live game with a friend? If someone could tell me, I would be very happy about it!
