So about a year ago, the only other time I've posted on this site, period, in well over a decade, I stated that it was obvious there was a GIANT wave of cheaters. People online were saying only about 2 percent of online players were using cheat applications. I would have said it was closer to 75% for a while. The wave kind of subsided and play found itself going back to the same kind of rhythms you would see all over the world for about a decade.
The last couple weeks, all of a sudden, my rating drops about 200 points, surely because of all the "newly skilled" 900's. Suddenly people pull off these amazing mid game tactics only to pin me into a draw. However, the first wave of cheaters taught me something: now I just chalk it up to making me a better chess player, even though my rating is plummeting. If someone has to use an app to best me, and I can pull level with a computer for 10 moves, that says something about my game.
Whereas I used to tell someone they were cheating mid-game, now I just let my moves do the talking, and maybe I'll be forced to start playing in real tournaments to find out how good I really am. So for you cheaters, go right ahead, you're only making the rest of us better players.
Have a nice day,
Hal Bachman
