nullI am a beginner and I don’t think this is checkmate.

It is checkmark. There is no way for the white K to get out of check.

Can you explain why you think it is not checkmate? Do you think the king has a flight square - somewhere it can move to where it will not be in check - or do you think you see a way of removing the current check?

Is the king in check? Yes.

Can the piece checking the king be captured? No.

Can the piece checking the king be blocked? No.

Can the king move to a square that is not attacked? No. (b3 is guarded by the rook on e3. b4 is guarded by the knight on a2, a5 is guarded by the same rook giving check from a8)

That's checkmate.

I see that you're the one who is earning this checkmate here. Were you just surprised because you moved the pawn and the pawn has nothing to do with the checkmate situation? What you did was called a discovered attack. You revealed the rook along the same file by moving the pawn, thus checking the king.

Isn’t it stalemate then?

Reread what I posted, I guess. You're not seeing the check?

The Black R on a18 is checking the White K on a4.
