1.Blocking the white queen from seeing the pawn,
2.Preventing the white king from taking the pawn.
Checkmate patterns


Black's queen is double edged because:
1. she blocks the attack from the white queen.
2. she takes the escape-square from the black king.
(The white queen can be switched by a white bishop)

(My opponent checkmate me lol. I don't think it's unique, it's Boden's Ugly Brother's Mate. see above. But it's another form of it, so it's worth seeing).

Happened to me once, so I don't know how practical it is, but here goes:
I guess the thing to learn here, is that pawns on 6th and 7th are dangerous not only because of queening. even 5th rank:

A less well-defined mating pattern is the King Hunt, in which the enemy King is forced to undertake a "death march" into the center or even into the opposing position.
