i think the chess is art
like everything we do
One could say that chess is pure rigorous logic framed by precise rules, therefore "science" - and it is true. But for those who have a passion in the game, with no doubt, the creativity and the elegance of certain combinations by great masters are "beauty" (or art) on top of the science.
A bit of both, IMO. Here are some better-known quotes:
Chess is the art of analysis - Botvinnik
Chess is an art - Kasparov
Chess is only a game and not to be classed with ... science ... or the arts - Lasker
Chess is everything - art, science and sport - Karpov
Chess is not a science - Poincare
Chess is an Art and a Science - [my opinion]... depends on how you see it. [like mvocale has said]. Chess is fun, Chess is cool, Chess is 'music' - in my ears...
I suppose that on the basis that experimentation leads to conclusions that are verifiable by comparisons and quantifiable analysis it is a science, but the ability of players to develop new ideas out of sheer creativity suggests it is an art.
In the quotes above, Botvnnik, Karpov, and Kasparov were correct. Lasker's quote makes no sense with the second claim, and Poincare's quote should be phrased differently. Maybe he meant science does not currently or will never completely explain chess.
Out of the three, Karpov created the most accurate description in my opinion.
Science ? LoL
At scholl we have 5 kind of school subject: math, biologic science, human science, languages and arts. Chess is more art than maths and science cause chess make the development of some things that is not part of mathematic for example: creativity
And to do art you need creativity.
Science or art? Well you could make chesspieces into some sort of abacus but really they are better suited as painting instruments. Art then.
Can't remember who to attribue this quote to, but it was once said:
"Chess is the purest form of art, and the most exact science".
A bit of both, IMO. Here are some better-known quotes:
Chess is the art of analysis - Botvinnik
Chess is an art - Kasparov
Chess is only a game and not to be classed with ... science ... or the arts - Lasker
Chess is everything - art, science and sport - Karpov
Chess is not a science - Poincare
Well that sure clears things up
from the classic chess film, 'schwartz und weiß wie tag und nacht' (black and white like night and day) with bruno ganz:
T. Rosenmund: What is Chess?
Koruga: Acoustic in the science... of sounds
Music is the art of creating beauty out of sounds
Chess..? Mathematics... is the science of logic.
Chess.. is the ability to create art out of logic.
Rosenmund: and the opponenet does not matter at all?
Koruga: He helps.. he offers.. resistance.
(Schwarz und weiss wie Tage und Nachte, Wolfgang Petersen, 1978)
Is chess a science or an art? Or is it a bit of both?
