>>Whoever invented chess was most certainly an artist.<<

Certainly. The matter is now settled.

Then, I would propose, Attila the Hun was an artist, too.

Ruthy...yes...I was thinking to add Hitler...and also Genghis Kahn...but I thought it would be redunant to the point  I was making.

A few people have touched on this, but there is no real distinction between "science" and "art".

In "science", there are baseline abilities necessary to do the work (arithmetic, calculus, knowledge of bone structure or geological formations) then there are the great theories that use these tools to explain the universe (game theory, evolution, quantum mechanics)

In "art" there are baseline abilities necessary to do the work (perspective, tonal composition of chords, camera positioning for films) then there are the great pieces of art that use these tools to explain the human condition (which is humanity's personal favorite corner of the universe to explore)

So I agree with the handful who have said "both".  :)

Well, let's summarize with a syllogism...

Premise 1: Chess is art of war.

Premise 2:  Atilla the Hun excelled at the art of war.

Therefore, Attila the Hun likely could have beaten a really, really good chess engine.

And Sun Tzu invented chess!

Sun Tzu goes back to 6th century B.C.[E.]

Here is some info for you, danny: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Tzu

It seems to me you are mistaking "Art of War" with the origins of chess.

Yeah, thanks...I was actually trying to make a pun on...never mind.

And as for the year "0", no such thing exists...there is a year 1 B.C.[E.], which is immediately followed by 1 A.D. (C.E.)

I think the reason why Jesus' birth is taken to be a few years before "0" is because Herod the Great mentioned in Matthew was dead in the year 4 B.C. and the census mentioned in Luke occurred around 6 B.C.  Also, I think the Gregorian calendar (centered around the birth of Jesus) was discovered to be slightly off and when corrected brought Jesus birth back a few years, but I can't remember.
