In August 14, 1972, the cover story of Sports Illustrated magazine was about Bobby Fischer's amazing run to the world championship match against Spassky.

Chess is definitely a sport.

Chess is a game.  Sports require a physical aspect and chess is mental.  Don't think about it too much people or you will find ways to make EVERYTHING a sport.  eg.. ironing, putting on pants, eating chocolate bars, doing drugs... etc.  You can always find ways to "beat" your "opponent" at anything.

well said, ANYTHING can be competitive... heck picking your nose can be competitive with others... cleaning dishes could be a sport by this awful claim.  Competition does not equal sport.  Why is monopoly not a sport, but football is?? because maybe monopoly players don't get tackled to the ground every turn :D

Your monopoly games sound boring in comparison to what i play.

Sitting in a room concentrating your hardest, while staying completely still and quiet for hours on end is a grueling activity that favors those in better shape. Strong chess players try to stay fit so that they can better handle the intensity of the sport. Is that not physical?

Hello all,

When I was a teenager I was a champion target shooter, and that is done in a prone position. Like chess, I would say that it is a mental activity, not a physical one, for if set correctly, your arm brace will hold your position as steady as a rock, all you need do is control your breathing.

How can it be a sport, if you're flat on your belly? I don't know, but it's called a sport?

I like to say 'hobby', because a hobby is something I do because I enjoy it.

if you want to call sports something that is determined by physical skill, then your gonna have to get rid of a lot of things that were considered sports (race car driving, target shooting, horse back riding, etc.)

chess is a kind of food.Wink

Well sport for me is any competitive activity, where skill, knowledge of the game, and practice determine the outcome of the game. From this definition there are two types of sports. Athletic and non-athletic. There are not many non-athletic sports.

Dont be so nit picky over the definition of the word "sport", but rather try to understand the spirit of the word. Games of chance are not sports, because luck is the determining factor.

To me chess is both sport and just a game. Is a sport when played competively but just a game when played against your mates, family or in the internet.

Chess is a recognized sport by the International Olympic Committee[3] with FIDE being the recognized International Sports Federation for chess since June 1999.

Either - depends on our point of view

Chess is a board game. Only at very high levels does it require physical endurance. It's mainly mental strength.

Its pretty much just a board game, like checkers.

Al we have to determine now, is this: "Can checkers be classified a sport or just a game?"

Chess is a game for the body, but a sport for the mind...

Race car driving requires major physical endurance - nascar drivers experience multiple G's in the turns -

Target shooting requires major hand, eye coordination - and you need to have complete muscle control to be able to hit repeated targets that are moving.

Even at 10 feet there are few people who can repeatedly hit a dime shaped target with a handgun shot

But you see nascar driving doesnt rely on your physical skills, it relies on your cars abilities and the mental capacity you have for driving. Shooting a gun doesnt rely on your physical abilites but rather your guns and the mental ability that goes into being able to perfectly aim your gun. Sure being strong may help you, but in chess being strong helps you just as much if you are fighting for the world championship against a better opponent, but you have more endurance than him, as was shown in Kasparov vs Karpov when Kasparov was much younger and in a long drawn out match that lasted over 40 games his physical strength allowed him to play better than karpov near the end.

Much of this discussion presumes that the mind is not a part of the body...

The car is important but so is reaction time and endurance - G - forces on a neck are critical
