OK, Not sure if chess is a sport or not. But here is one for you.

Joey Chessnut ate about 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes.  Now that is a athelte. Do you know how much training he has to do. He is the world champ. Bet they make that an Olimpic sport.

That is one toned up dude.

Chess??  Sport ???

A sport is a competition of physical exertion whose rules (alone) are adequate to determine a winner.

So, if you can break a sweat playing chess, it is a sport.

Figure skating, on the other hand, is not a sport.

Its been done to death and really, who cares, but I agree, chess is not a sport. It's a damn game.

GeordiLaForge

It's not a real sport unless people die.

I think Alan Turing's Run-around-the-house-chess would qualify.

Sabachka

Of course not.  Chess is a game.

And games are far superior to sports.

People pulling up dictionary definitions to prove a point would do well to actually cite a complete definition from a collection considered to be a standard reference by lexicographers.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - - that's all."

Define "Directly Physical"

If you consider Football or Cricket a sport, then why not chess? It's competitive. If you think directly physical means physical contact then Golf and Tennis aren't sport. If you mean running around then Formula 1 and Pool aren't sports. If you mean not staying stationary then Crossbow shooting and fishing aren't sports.

"Directly Physical" is very ambiguous and I think open to interpretation. I think there is a committee which decides on whether to call something a sport though.

checkmateibeatu

Directly physical means the game itself is pysical, not just that you train physically for it.

i am guessing the op has never played OTB competitive tournament chess.  it takes its toll on the player, both physically and mentally.  playing 5 minute games on the internet is a completely different thing than playing a six-hour monster of a game with someone who is sitting across from you.

"Sport is all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants. Sport may be competitive, where a winner or winners can be identified by objective means, and may require a degree of skill, especially at higher levels. Hundreds of sports exist, including those for a single participant, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as Some non-physical activities, such as board games and card games are sometimes referred to as sports, but a sport is generally recognised as being based in physical athleticism."

All right then, chess is a sport.

"Sport is all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants.

Chess is physical activity, there is no non-physical activity.

And the reason figure skating is not a sport is because it is based on subjective, rather than objective principles.

Differentiate between sport and game.

checkmateibeatu
Chess is a mental game. Considering it a sport because you physically have to move the pieces is pointless.

What happens if we relabel chess? The way I see it, there are 2 possibilities:

1. Nothing

2. Strokes an ego or two, but otherwise nothing.

You could call an apple USDA Prime Beef, but no one is going to make a burger out of it, they'll keep treating it like a damn fruit.

A slightly better example might be to just tell everyone who thinks it is a sport to play it like it's a sport and those who think it's a game to play it like it's a game. Strangely enough, they're going to be doing the exact same thing.

Okay if Chess is labled a Sport, next Checkers will be labled a Sport, followed by Backgammon, Monopoly, Clue, Candyland, and of course Tic Tac Toe.

My point precisely.
