Yes, I agree it is addictive.  As much as World of Warcraft?  I wonder if it has more to do with the online aspect of it than the game itself.  In my opinion, the main thing that hooks people is staring into the screen - there's a stimulation effect.  When I'm on the subway nearly everyone is mezmerized by their phone.  Mezmerized is the right word, I think.  I can't say chess is as insanely addictive as some of those other games that people get so involved with they can't function in life.  But I've stayed up playing very late on a few occasions...

mhh...  Interesting theory.  Maybe that is a factor but it is small in my opinion.  I have played video games before that are not quite like chess and got bored of them.

I believe I got bored of them because I completed them and got really good quickly to a stage where I would lose rarely.  Chess is not like this because the room for improvement is infinetely vast and so are lots of levels.

When you win a games, you feel very pleased and when you lose games, you get very low...  It is these high low aspects that make things addictive.  No good if you were high all the time, you will get used to it and get bored.  When things are low, you desire the highs so much and you get a hunger for it.

@ChessOfPlayer:  What you say is true.  There's another thing, too - the beauty of the game.  Chess has an artistic quality to it.  I don't think we'd keep coming back if we didn't enjoy finding beautiful moves on occasion.  I still think interfacing with the electronic screen is an underappreciated factor, though.  And I believe that scientists will ultimately realize that LED screens cause (mild) brain damage.  If we were able to play chess.com on a kindle sort of device would it have the same attraction?  Maybe but I doubt it.  Anyway, it's an interesting problem...

Chess is not for the faint-hearted; it absorbs a person entirely. To get to the bottom of this game, he has to give himself up into slavery. Chess is difficult, it demands work, serious reflection and zealous research. Wilhelm Steinitz

Chess is mental torture. Garry Kasparov

Chess is a sport; a violent sport. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

Chess players are madmen of a certain quality, the way the artist is supposed to be, and isn’t, in general. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art – and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

How many chess addicts does it take to change a light-bulb? Answer: they won't change it, they will play blindfold. MarcoBR444.
