Chess & Music together?

Hi,

I just wanted to get some feedback on this topic. Thank you.

Basically, I've talked to a few players on chess.com who tell me they listen to music when they play chess. They both like hard rock for playing bullet chess. Do you listen to music while playing any time controls in chess? I need to focus 100% on the game, so music is not part of my game. I'm a musician and of course I love all types of music, but they just don't mix for me. I've been in bands for over 30 years...lots of gigs. :) The only exception to this rule of music not working for me during chess is off line when I'm looking at Online chess...(3-day) and have as much time as I need to make my move. Then it's still very rare that I do this. If you do listen to music while playing chess, could you share what type of music? Also, how about OTB and tournaments? Thank you!

I think it is because you are more involved with your music when you listen to it as you are musicians yourselves, for others it is just slight background noise but for you it is a distraction as you are more aware of the music itself, what do you think?

I'm a musician and I always listen to music when playing chess. It doesn't hinder me concentrating, in fact it can help because it blocks outside noises.

I don't usually listen to music while playing chess, but when I do, it is Mozart.  Lyrics distract me since my brain will automatically focus on interpretting them.  And I need something slow, pretty, and gentle to help me relax since competitive chess tends to make me tense.

In all of my quick chess I play faster-tempo music to make sure I remember to move quickly, and in my OTB games I usually prefer utter silence, but if there is an unavoidable noise in the tournament area then I prefer to listen to classical. I am a musician as well.

I play classical piano, also I'm my church pianist. Mostly I listen to traditional Russian/Cossack music.

Right now I'm listening to a HTTYD 2 medley on YOUtube.

Thank you all! I listen to fusion music… So it's very busy with a lot of notes. Being a drummer/bass player, I cannot even think about listening to any music during chess. My mind goes to what time signature is this and so on…RSK, I think you hit the nail on the head for me when you said  "I think it is because you are more involved with your music when you listen to it as you are musicians yourselves, for others it is just slight background noise but for you it is a distraction as you are more aware of the music itself."

This is great! Please keep it going.

I've been listening to Radiohead all day, and I'm about to play chess while listening to the "Hail to the Thief" cd:)

It's not music, but when I need to mask background noise, I have also used high-quality recordings of ocean waves breaking on the shore.  The white noise aspects do a great job of erasing voices, and no distracting beat.

The only sound I like to hear when playing chess are my own screams of anguish as my opponent rams a bishop up my @$$

Chess69em

I like to listen to JJ Cale or Leon Russell and such. ~or~ anything with a good horn section.

This might help me a lot because I have borderline severe Tinnitus from being a musician all of my life. I have to take one med to help me sleep because of the tinnitus. But, when I focus on chess I forget about the ringing/ Field of crickets that I hear 24/7.  Thank you.

I have mild tinnitus which gets worse when I'm tired or consume caffeine.  Aware of it at this very moment.  My father had it worse (maybe heriditary?).  An aquaintance of mine had it so bad it made her distraught.  Fortunately she is in remission -- don't understand why it came on then lessened again in her case.  My sympathies Tim, hopefully medical science will figure out how to treat this condition.  I agree that ocean waves help, and it's more appealing than listening to pure white noise.

tinnitus? Not as bad as my Tourettes, I bet in a Chess match situation.... Neighbors don't even talk to me anymore.

Paul Harvey once told me that if you hold your earlobe between the thumb and index finger, then tap on your index finger with your middle finger eliminates it. Science knows not why.
