Chess & Music together?

Thanks everyone. Hope to hear from more of you on this topic. What kind of music do you listen to? Thanks again!

TurboFish

Steve Hackett, Genesis, Yes, Rush, Moody Blues, or Kate Bush if I'm not playing chess.

 Genesis, Yes, and Rush! YES!

I had front row seats for Rush...Roll The Bones Tour! They played two nights in Cleveland and we got lucky the second day when we called to get tickets again, lol. They had just opened the front row. It was great. 😄

I a big fan of all three of the bands above. Thanks Turbo.

I've been to a few Rush concerts, both way back (Moving Pictures) and recently (Clockwork Angels).  Never sat near front row, unfortunately.  It must have been fun to see them up close, Geddy and Alex are such characters, and Neil is mindblowing as the world's best drummer.  The two albums I mentioned are IMO their masterpieces.  So glad I got to see them live!  As you can tell, my favorite style is prog-rock. BTW, it's the early Genesis I like, before Phil Collins took the band in a more mainstream pop direction.

Rush: Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart

I saw Yes a couple of years ago in Clearwater, FL.  They performed 3 complete albums of my favorites, and sounded better than ever.  I was amazed to experince this beautiful complex music live.

I'm with you 100%! Old school Genesis. Also great picture of Rush. I will miss them very much. Thanks.

Classical music would be perfect if I did listen to music during chess.  Thank you.

I mostly listen to ambient trance cause I play like 45/45 and you have to relax and be calm. It's like meditating for me.

it's an interesting topic for sure, tbh I think when you focus hard enough you block everything out anyway so maybe it makes no difference when calculating

This. If i focus iam not listening to the music at all, so I dont even play it.

Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Goldfinger, Jimmy Eat World, Anti-Flag, Deathcab for Cutie and Funeral for a Friend go good with chess.  Some Gym Class Heroes too.

Just no Blood on the Dance Floor, they're terrible.

I'm all about fusion music. Very busy music with lots of notes in different time signatures. Such as Tribal Tech. :) Scott Henderson and Gary Willis. :)

Today I'm going to try some hard rock with bullet chess, lol! I'll let you all know how that goes. Take care everyone. :)

Listening to music during bullet games doesn't distract me or hinder my performance. In fact, it helps me to keep focused and I think I actually play a little better... Classical, IDM, folk, rock, jazz, whatever's up my valley will do. It helps if the songs have a dynamic and strong rythm. Something to mellow won't quite jive with the game.

For longer games, anything is a distraction.

AppleTim

Yes! I'm enjoying it a lot, lol. Playing well for me. As long as I also crank up the click of the pieces moving. Wow, the blood is flowing. Thanks guys! 💰

AppleTim

I'm now listening to some old Dream Theater while playing bullet chess. I'm old, lol! :)

AppleTim

Give this a try with headphones! :)

Music was my first love, long before chess. I like to listen to music while playing alone, going through annotated games or inventing my own positions because that time is strictly for recreation and personal enjoyment. During regimented study such as tactics trainer, blitz games or OTB I go with ambient silence. Not necessarily because I have noticed that music distracts me, but because it doesn't matter. My brain tends to exclude nearly every other sensory input when I concentrate on chess, so music would be superfluous in that scenario.

Now enjoying listening to bluegrass covers of classic rock.  What a hoot!
