I do better after I've had a medium sized meal. If I eat too much I want to go off and sleep. If I don't eat, I space out. My wife and I play chess and if the game is goinig during dinner, we play. This is an interesting topic. Thanks for the posting.
Chess and Eating?

Do you personally do better at chess when eating or not eating. I find myself to win a lot more during lunch at my chess club than during rated games, but it might be because I'm one of the few who actually pays attention during these games. I'm curious to see what you guys say.
So, you're saying that you win chess games against people who aren't paying attention? What does eating have to do with it?

I was saying I wasn't sure if the people I played paid attention or not. Since I don't know if they pay full attention to the game, I'll just assume that they do, and that eating is the main reason why I do better.

Do you start playing badly once you're done eating?

No, it just seems like I happen to play better when I eat (and a little bit after eating) than when I play like a couple hours after lunch.

Did you test to see if it's eating causing you to play better, or if it's the time of day, when you're more awake? Did you try playing a game during breakfast or dinner?

No, I haven't experimented with it very much. I posted this to see if anyone else had any similar results with eating and chess, not to be scrutinized by you because I haven't done any research into the matter.

Sorry

Maybe if you play chess on an empty stomach you get hungry for pieces and become too materialistic during a game?
I don't know! :)

GM Walter Browne once offered to buy any opponent a full-sized steak dinner one hr before their game. The same article mentioned that Spassky usually ate dinner a few to several hours before playing serious games. Being hungry can obviously be distracting but being stuffed to the gills is probably worse, since you'll either feel uncomfortable and/or sleepy. Moderation is what's called for here.

Probably has to do with blood sugar levels. Not scrutinizing you. But trying to explain the reason it might be. Especially if you tend to eat very large meals with lots of sugar in them. Also, when I was in school I had to eat all the time so it may be a high metabolism thing.
Personally I am hypoglycemic(my blood sugar can get dangerously low) so I need to be grazing all day anyway.

Trysts, it's okay, just kinda lost my cool a little bit there. And erikido23, that's probably why I do better, because generally I do feel pretty tired during the day and lunch is what wakes me up. I don't think it's a whole lot of sugar, but it might be the amount of food, which can be quite a bit.
