They say that if you are doing horribly at chess, you should take a long break to relax your mind and refresh yourself as good preparation.
It is much different than other activities, like practicing a music instrument; it is not such a good idea to take a very long break since one's ability can melt away.
For chess, I think this is Ok since you can't really easily forget elements of chess; each new game = each new start!
