At school I played for the provincial team that consisted of VARIOUS kids from VARIOUS schools. Most children that was at least moderate players was academically either average or above-average but none were completely stupid.
However, just to play for the school team you just have to show up. If you just push around the pieces without much thought, you dont develop anything - just killing time so that you have an excuse not to participitate in more physical activities at school.
My conclusion is that if you are an intermediate chess player you are not completely stupid, but not neccesarily very clever either. If you are a beginner in chess you can draw no conclusion - Einstein was also a beginner in chess.

I think children should get some sort of mental stimulation during their day, which they unfortunately don't get during school. Chess could provide this if the children want it. If they don't want it all you've got is a bunch of chillins pushin' wood.
