Dear Chess Enthusiasts and Friends,On this auspicious occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, I extend my warmest wishes to all my national and international friends in the chess community! May the spirit of freedom, unity, and perseverance that defines our nation's journey inspire your games on the 64 squares. As we celebrate India's independence, it's fitting to reflect on how chess has become a symbol of our country's intellectual prowess and global rise. From the legendary Viswanathan Anand, who became India's first Grandmaster in 1988 and went on to claim five World Chess Championships, to the recent triumphs that have solidified India as a chess superpower. In 2024, our teams swept gold medals in both the Open and Women's sections at the FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest – a historic double that marked a new era. Then, young prodigy D. Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at just 18, defeating Ding Liren. With talents like Arjun Erigaisi crossing the 2800 Elo barrier, and five Indian players ranking in the world's top 15, India's chess journey mirrors our nation's path from colonial rule to global leadership.Adding to this legacy, in 2025, Divya Deshmukh clinched the FIDE Women's World Cup, defeating compatriot Koneru Humpy in a thrilling tiebreak final, becoming the third Indian woman to claim this prestigious title and qualifying for the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament.
At just 19, her victory not only highlights the depth of talent in Indian women's chess but also paves the way for future contributions, inspiring a new generation of players and potentially leading India to dominate women's chess events globally, much like our men's team has done. These achievements position India to host more international tournaments, foster chess education in schools, and contribute to the game's growth worldwide through innovation and inclusivity.Chess teaches us strategy, resilience, and foresight – qualities that fueled India's freedom struggle and continue to drive our progress. To my fellow Indians, let's keep pushing boundaries on the board and beyond. To our international friends, thank you for the fierce yet friendly rivalries that make chess a universal language of camaraderie.Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!
