i have anxiety and i was wondering if others on this site know  about if chess can worsen it. i generally dont have such a problem but chess makes me very tense. its hard to enjoy when i cant focus on the game. feedback or comments appreciated

i dont feel like this is a commonly addressed topic. dont be afraid to admit, people

if i get in a mood where i fret about ratings then i might get anxious or even afraid to start a new game; and i will most likely press and tilt and all of the ill that goes with this

if i am in a good frame of mind then, win, lose, or draw, any anxiousness disappears (or never appears in the first place) and i can truly enjoy playing

Actually that was a quote we were saying to each other. The back story was that me and him worked at the same conpany and he slept with my wife but the joke was that we were going to realize that it wasnt "karen" we loved, but each other. He was actually banned from making comments so I hope this gives closure.

Right. Uuuuh. Stress can be caused from Chess but you eventually learn to play into your stress you can actually take risks that your not normally accustumed to

I had a friend years ago who thought chess was a neat game, so he tried to learn it. After a few months, he came to the conclusion that chess was not a fun game. You sit in a chair and torture yourself for hours over the fate of some worthless pawn.

If you can't get beyond that, you probably should find something else to do.

Yes and no, yes because you may be stressed during the game or afraid of some move that your opponent can make etc.

I think playing Chess will help you because you take your mind away from what you're anxious about, so in that respect no.

I got really stressed out playing chess games when I took it more seriously. I played otb and at home, studying master games and learning openings etc and got up to just over a 1700 rating otb but I found myself too disappointed or annoyed when I lost. Putting hours into a game and losing would ruin my whole day and put a negative tinge on the rest of the week so I eventually stopped playing, except for blitz otb with my friend and tactics puzzles on here. I’m aware this is a problem in my head and not a problem with chess itself but you’re not alone OP.

Never had it. Probably do but I would categorize that as excitement for the good fight rather than anxiety.
