Can someone become a better player using only online board ?
Is it a must for a serious player to have a real board and pieces?

Yes totally possible. You do not need a board, but having one is nice to play with family, friends and to study.

Former World Champion Capablanca did not own a chess board. He did not study either.

When Capablanca played, the Chess theory was in its diapers.
There was nothing to study besides maybe Morphy and Steinitz.
