"Simple Chess" by Michael Stean is a great introduction to a lot of strategic ideas. It's short, accessable, and brilliant. And when you're stronger, you can reread it and get even more out of it! You can get the algebraic edition from Amazon for under $10--an incredible bargain.
"Simple Chess" by John Emms is another excellent strategy book: a slim paperback that covers several important topics with wit and clarity. It's very much worth reading
