What Chess books have you read? What are your favourites?

Lifewitlooie

i recently started playing chess again but i stead of running out and buying some books i went to the local libraries. i went to two different libraries and collectively they had 3 chess books.. pitiful but i am currently reading the complete najdorf by Nuun. it is quite a task i think because i spent about an hour on page one along with moving pieces back and forth

A unique read is "Chess For Zebras" by Jonathan Rowson.

I am currently working through Jeremy Silman's books.  Good reads all about the imbalances of chess and how to use them to your own advantage.

I am reading "Chess for Zebras" right now. Best chess book I've had so far! (We should harass Mr. Rowson to write another book.) I have also enjoyed "Move First, think later".

Oxford Companion To Chess, I pick it up and start reading on any random page for entertainment. I wish I could buy a new copy it's become so worn out and dog-eared. Best money I ever spent for the entertainment value and thousands of hours of enjoyment I've gotten from it over the past 30 years.

I've been studying Chess Tactics for Kids. Someone on this forum suggested it, and it's a really helpful book. I've also got Jeremy Silman's book How to Play Chess. It comes with a dvd, and I'm finding it really helpful.  He mentions the book Chess for Zebras in his suggested reading list. I must check it out at some point.

Sadler’s QGD. Any author who wants to write an opening book needs to read this book first, then either reconsider, start over, or hire Sadler as co-author.

Marovic’s Secrets of Positional Chess ... if only I had the playing strength to truly appreciate this book.

Marovic is great. His "Understanding Pawn Play in Chess" and "Dynamic Pawn Play in Chess" are excellent books also. If you're ever tempted to study Kmoch's famous work, do those two books first. They cover much of the same ground in a much more understandable way.

"Generally speaking, 'Starting Out' and 'Sicilian Najdorf' are not exactly words that one envisions in the same title, because anyone who is just starting out should not dive into the vast ocean of theory that is the Najdorf. For beginners, the time invested in studying even minor lines can be more productively used solving tactical puzzles and basic endgame technique.

... In some lines, a good understanding of basic principles will take you far, while in others, such as the Poisoned Pawn (6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 Qb6!?), memorization is a must, as one wrong move can cost you the game in the blink of an eye. ..." - FM Carsten Hansen (2006)

For off-beat reading, see if you can find a copy of Oxford's Chess Companion.  It's about 20 years old, but packed with great reading.
