I ran a plugin to capture page load times for a while. The loads were slower than in v2 but I rarely had load time of more than 5 seconds. I very rarely had longer load times. I've had a full reinstall of the browser, due to troubleshooting some weird interaction with the developer's edition of FF and the network I'm on, but subjectively, the speeds aren't any worse and often feel better than when I was testing objectively.

I just tested a plugin on Chrome and the pages all are loading in 2 seconds or faster on v3. I'll have to test on FF later.

Maybe you should get your head out of the book and into the game. These "junk openings" you speak of aren't that bad if played properly. Maybe you should try to improve actual gameplay.
I do not see a reason to read on moves to chess because to me it diminishes the purpose you're playing, to work out what is to be worked out.

I was able to get a short test in and while FF was a little slower than Chrome it was under 3 seconds on all loads.

I can count to maybe two. And I don't even have my own wifi -- I parasite it from a neighbor 30 yards away.
V3 is just fine.
