It gets to a point where you get +0 for a win, -8 for a draw and -16 for a loss.

According to the chess.com Elo system, a 2,000 will have a 0% chance of not beating a 1,000.
This is simply wrong.
What if you mouse - slip? what if you disconnect? what if you play against a new account?
Either make online tournaments unrated or add an incentive for high rated players to join.
Arenas are practically places for low rated players to harvest free Elo.
