Can you show me an example game where this happened?
This would be a good topic for the suggestions forum or to follow this article: https://support.chess.com/en/articles/8583752-how-do-i-report-a-bug-or-make-a-suggestion
Here is an article that describes how points are earned: https://support.chess.com/en/articles/8614529-how-many-points-do-i-get-for-winning-how-do-i-know
Those chasing rating inflation will succeed enough short-term to impress their friends, but they won't improve. The person who accepts they will only gain +8 rating and still chooses to grind everyday long-term even when their friends and family have already stopped believing in them, they will improve.
you're a mod
explain this
opponent is rated 40 pts higher than a player and receives +17 rating pts for defeating a player who is rated 40 pts lower?????????????????????
how is that justified on Chess.com?
If the player hadn't played a lot of games in the time control or had a longer gap in play, their Glicko rating deviation (RD) value was higher, so they'll see larger rating changes after games.
As more recent games get played, that RD value will decrease, as will the magnitude of rating changes.
