Is chess.com tactics rating any indication of how well one plays in real games? It seems are being initiated by chess engines. Maybe I really shouldn't pay attention to the tactics rating and simply use it for practice?

It can help your game. The rating doesn't matter much.

No the ratings aren't an indication of how one plays "real" games, but the rating is useful in the sense it will give you harder problems the higher your rating.
