Hello all, I am relatively new to chess and was wondering if a chess computer would be of help to me. I notice that on ebay there are many that are selling at low cost. The problem for me is which to buy as there seems to be so many. Any information etc would be most welcome. Thank you.

Hello, Thank you all for the replies. I like the one about the Chessmaster 3000 but as I am 84 and not good with computers I will have to do a bit of research. I know what DOS stands for but not emulation. Will it run on windows 10 which is what I have or do I need an old computer. How do you download it so that it will stay on the computer. I have many questions and would be grateful if anybody out there can send me any info. Thank you all once again.

It might be nice to do so. Try out some adaptive bots (computers). If you haven’t upgraded, try Jimmy bot (from adaptive). Bots are computers, anyway.

Adaptive bots move depending upon what you move. If you are low material, they will go easy on you. If you are up material, they will go harder on you! They work perfectly well with relatively new people with chess, and for every chess bot (computer) or chess.com, you can enable bot chat. That enables the computer to chat with you as you move! (Sadly, you cannot say anything. Only computers can if your opponent is a computer or bot.) They encourage you to play well, and I insist you might like Jimmy, he’s nice. Ok now, I’ve told you everything, now I’m gonna check out other forums. Bye!

Probably the easiest way to set up Chessmaster 3000 would be to download it from gamesnostalgia.com. They've already packaged it with a DOS emulator, and it's set up to run in Win 7 or Win 10. (Also Mac.) Just Google the site, then search for chessmaster 3000, and you'll see the download links. They also have brief instructions on how to install it.

Oh yeah, if you can't extract the downloaded file (chessmaster3000_dos_win.7z), then you'll also need to download and install the 7-Zip archive program from this site: https://www.7-zip.org/

Or instead, just download and install this file: https://www.7-zip.org/a/7z2201-x64.exe

After that, you should be able to extract the 7z file.
