Chess computer vs chess software

So I have been searching the forums and can't find an answer to this question so I was hoping someone on here might have some thoughts.  My question is if I have $300ish bucks to spend to improve my game would I be better off buying a chess software like chessbase and then playing online free through chess.com or its competitors or would I be better off buying an electronic chessboard like the millennium Performance King and using Scid vs PC for free?  To be clear I'm not asking about the legality of using a real chessboard for an online game, which many of these OTB chess online strings tend to devolve.  I just want to know where I will get the best bang for my buck and why (Performance King vs Chessbase or Fritz)?  Thanks!

I can`t tell you about which are best.

But softwares are way better then e-boards.

Software is almost always going to be more flexible and offer more opportunities for learning, in my opinion.

crazy idea: ask in the chess books and equipment forum.
