yes!
your opponent then plays against a machine, believing he plays you.
if you got a chess-program, just play it for yourself, do not use it against others in any way.

Interesting . Okay but what if the opponent knows ? And say I was to use an engine to play really strong players and thus maybe learn responses. therefore cutting down on study time?
And would I be banned for cheating even if my opponent knew I was using an engine? I ask this because from what I gather, Chess.com randomly and actively checks games for cheaters in all rating levels .
If the game is unrated,
if opponent knows beforehand,
and if opponent explicitly agrees,
then you may use chess engine to help you.

Okay but my question is: How would the cheat police know that the game was agreed upon under these terms? What steps would we have to take before hand? Would we have to state it in the chat box ? Or say : In the Title of the game?

I suppose they do not routinely scan unrated games, unless opponent fills a ticket with specific report and details.
exactly - but I promise you, you will not learn anything this way. not anything, I`m afraid. Like sitting on a champions row-boat and only watching the champion row. well then: row, row, row your boat...

Yes, you should title the game to reference engines being used. Then it's allowed.
Using an engine *during* a game does not help you to learn. Rather using an engine after a game to analyze can help you learn from your mistakes. It's the post-mortem analysis that helps you improve (whether or not you use an engine to assist in the analysis).
I think that using an engine during a game can in fact help one to learn. But nevertheless it is against the rules to use one during a game.
I think it could become a crutch and you will "check" to make sure that you are making the right move. Programs can tell you the best move, but they don't necessarily tell you the best plan.
Is it considered cheating if one uses a chess engine to play Unrated games ?
I think that cheating is cheating, regardless of whether toy win points or not :)

Bebe: Do you know how the youtube person made the analysis? When I paste a PGN file into an engine, I only get limited feedback (best move and some side comment such as "and now black has given the game away" or "have you thought about playing backgammon, instead").

Thank you for this post.
is there a thread that explains what all should be submitted as proof to report someone consistently using unfair means?

You do not need to submit anything other than the report and if you suspect games from a certain areas (such as just rapid for example), include that.
