Chess Etiquette after game

in general you should say 'owned' if you beat the other person and say 'nice engine' if you lose to him.

When I was brand new to the site I beat someone and he said "nice engine!". I had no idea what an engine was at the time and I didn't know how to take it... so I just said "Thanks!"... Looking back I'm glad I said that... probably riled the sore loser a bit. Laughing

This thread is just full of things that are unsaid.

I am always confused on what is an appropriate thing to say after a game of chess.

Just say GG (it's neutral) or say nothing at all.

If said as the winner, it can be construde as rude and condescending. Allow the loser to compliment the winner with a well played game. If the loser says nothing, neither should the winner say anything.

Hmmm... I'd agree if you've just owned them, gg would come across as stuck up. But if it's a close game which could have gone either way then I don't see a problem with gg from the winner.

That said, there are some people who seem to take gg as offensive in any context (perhaps they think it stands for something else, any suggestions?!)

I think the most polite things for one-sided games are probably "thanks" if you won, and "wp" (well played) if you lost.

@Artofdeception

Wait. What if the game is a draw?

And does it make a difference which player "escaped" with that draw?

All I can say is WOW!
What a bunch of weirdos posting in this thread...

Jesus_Quintana

I alway like being told that I am a lousy chess player, after I beat somebody...

^ This.

It's especially rude if said by a much lower rated player to a higher rated player after an upset.  Presumably, if the game had indeed been well played, the result would have been different!

if i get a challenging game from a player higher or lower win or a loss i say good game might even friend them

@ArtOfDeception:

I really appreciate your advice. Unfortunately, I followed it and got arrested. Also, I am banned from the club now. :(

The authorities obviously know nothing about proper chess etiquette!

In OTB games, I generally say good game, and if there is a surprisingly good move my opponent made, I compliment him about it. Online, well... "GG" seems to be enough.

when I first came here I said "greetings" before every match and "gg" at the close of every game.  that seems to have fell way out of fashion, most who do say a hello are very interested in some conversation which is good.  Sometimes saying gg after a game, especially if you lost badly or trounced your opponent seems wrong if not done all the time.  If someone comes out with a blitzkrieg queen game and blunders badly I normally do offer the compulsory "gg" IMHO i think a simple "patzer" should be the new gg

I disagree.  If you are compelled to do the same action after every game it becomes an empty gesture.  gg should be reserved for congratulating an opponent on playing a game of a certain quality.  Nothing should be said if one side was clearly outclassed.  I don't see the point, and it has the potential to irritate the loser.

Ruby-Fischer

Not again, just dont say gg...   seriously, no, dont do it... aggh

I play 30 min time control and lately I have been trying to briefly discuss the game with my opponent whether I won or lost.  It has not work so far.  Regarless, at the end I type, gg.  Cheers.

I really don't know, sometime go well and sometime go bad with chess players as I write - after a winning or a losing- a simple thank you for the game. I still remember, last September when I won an interesting game and, after my usual frase, the opponent suggested me to take some igienic paper and go to the bathroom... I was not in needing of that, instead I just shut up my keyboard, opened the fridge and took a beer, not replying at all to my opponent!

ACookieJar

I think... i must... i mean... i think i will follow the Art of Deception's proper Chess Etiquette.... and... i must follow it... any decent person with some feeling would know its not only the best thing to do its the right thing to do.

Black_Locust

I didn't realize people could be so sensitive!  When I lose, I usually say "Congratulations".  When I win but it was close, I usually say something like "thanks for a challenging game".

I never taunt or harass and am continually surprised at sore losers and the amount of obnoxious poor winners.  I believe any game of chess is a gg, I play seriously and we all have bad days, play poorly sometimes it does not mean a person is mentally deficient if they have a bad game...  But as you said, some take it negatively so i have stopped.  The folks who say Hi always say hi back and have met some nice players this way..  it is sad how often when winning in live chess I get insulted for being American..
