I've used ''pychess'' and yes, you can use different Engines with it. Its good for average users like me.
There are other really good options too, like Scid and Shredder which are genuinly good for all levels.

XBoard is one of the most versatile Chess interfaces for Linux. It is very easy to operate, and can be installed from the distro repositories. Don't forget to also install the packages polyglot (so you can also run UCI engines) and fairymax (the default engine).
Engines that can be installed directly from the repositories of most distros, beside fairymax, are stockfish, fruit, gnuchess, phalanx.
Are there any good chess programs for linux mint? I made the switch to linux from windows. Programs that would allow you to play against imported engines, also a game and position analyser. I am aware that I can use wine to run chessbase etc, but I am interested in software meant for linux.
