ipcress12, could you have a look at the thread title again please ? ta luv.
Chess for nerds? The stereotype

People only call other people nerds or geeks or whatever because they lack the intelligence and capacity to do what we can. Don't be ashamed of nerdiness; wield it. Don't hide it; show it. Let it shine. It can only do you credit. After all, knowledge is power.

At a Halloween party this year, the 'Grim Reaper' won the contest. I have decided that next year I am going to try to win as 'Chess Nerd from Hell!' I will be 'wearing' my large wooden board around my neck or at my side and get all duded up with the taped eyeglasses, big plastic buck teeth, a math book or two, white shirt w/ pocket protector, too short pants, tennis shoes and have chess pieces either stuck to the board or my clothing. Then I guess my face should look somewhat zombie-ish or melting skin or something. Letcha know a year from now if I win.

We will all keep this topic tracked and will hold you to your word. We expect your response on the 40th birthday of Bohemian Rhapsody.

I graduated high school in 1981. I wasn't a nerd or considered one. I did a couple of minor sports, was in a few clubs, basically just went and passed the time until I could leave and go to college out of town and be on my own two feet. HS just wasn't a good thing OR a bad thing for me.
I didn't take up chess until I was about 23, when a friend who'd been to Russia and I played a game on his Russian chess set. He knocked me over, and I got charged up to try to beat him. So I got interested in the sport of chess. It's good tough fun.
I still play tennis as much as I can, and run a bit, too. Used to play ice hockey and do long distance cycling.

I really dont understand the connotation of being a nerd if one plays and loves chess. me and my several chess friends are very sociable and intelligent. none of us are frail or weak, and the majority are in relationships...an unfortunate stereotype.

JayBo308 - pics please, sounds like my kind of guy!
Yes, I promise pics, Cath. But be patient, next Halloween is a long way off.

I honestly believe that it's about your character and who you are. If you are a nerd, then embrace it.. it's not a bad thing at all. But for me I'm not a "nerd".. i enjoy chess and play it frequently but usually when people find out im into chess they are surprised and i think a lot of times i make it cool, it's all about owning up to what you like and not shying away from it. If you like chess and you are truly into it, you can potentially intrigue your friends into at least trying it out.. playing chess doesn't make somebody a nerd, being a nerd makes you a nerd.
Gosh you tire easily must be an ipcress12 thing. No shooting required you seem to be doing a good job all by yourself.
