Found another cute item about Golf, this one is from Gene Perret: " In my retirement I go for a short swim at least once or twice every day. It's either that or buy a new golf ball ."

Great commercial, Bob.  It would make for a good memory test for us Oldtimers to ID all the "celebs of the day" that were in that ad.  Made me think of a recent post from badenwurtca.  "First you forget the names, then you forget the faces, then you forget ........."

Yes, it would make a great test of one's memory, Steve.  I was surprised how many I remembered from the world of sports and not just entertainment.  There are very few good commercials around today except those showcasing animals.  All too many seem to put down men.  Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?

Just found another item from George Carlin ( this one is funny and yet rather sad at the same time ): " Just think of how stupid the average person is, and realise that half of them are stupider than that. "

Time for Peter Ustinov to be quoted here: " If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done. "

Thank you for the Peter Ustinov quote, badenwurtca.  I always liked Ustinov as an actor and as a narrator/actor of documentaries such as Inside the Vatican.  If you've never seen We're No Angels (1955), the offbeat Christmas film and lighthearted satire starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, Aldo Ray, Joan Bennett, Basil Rathbone, Leo G. Carroll and the incomparable Adolphe, you should.

Though there was no chess played in the film, here is a publicity photo of Bogart playing Miss Bennett on the set.

Thanks for the post and the photo Fightingbob. I did have the chance to see " We're No Angels " quite some years ago, nice film. Yes Peter Ustinov was a good actor, he had a great part in " Sparticus ", another film that I enjoyed.

Found an interesting item from John Mortimer: " I refuse to spend my life worrying about what I eat. There is no pleasure worth forgoing just for an extra three years in the geriatric ward. "

Well said and quite expected from the creator of Rumpole of the Bailey.  Horace Rumpole is one of my favorite philosophically melancholy, misanthropic, yet exceedingly likable observers of human nature in all of literature, particularly when played by the incomparable Leo McKern in the Thames Television series.

Thanks for the post and the info Fightingbob. I had the chance to watch a number of the " Rumpole " episodes years ago when I still had Cable TV. It was a very good series with Leo McKern being the perfect guy to play the main character.

It might be time for a quote from a rather large Gent   lol. Here is a funny item from the late Orson Welles: " My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four, unless there are three other people. "

Love Orson Welles, badenwurtca, and his films.  I have a friend who is a devotee of his radio programs, and listening to them I have come to the conclusion as others have that he was quite the boy genius.  He was a great synthesizer of longer works into shorter formats.  In other words, unlike what we have around today in this random access age, he was a talented narrative storyteller.

badenwurtca

Thanks for the post Fightingbob. Yes Orson Welles was quite a talent and also a rather original character.

In this thread we do from time to time poke fun at the passage of time, however as we get older we might grow sad because time does keep rolling along ( and rolling along ... ). Alexander Pope put it in an interesting way: " Is that a birthday ? 'Tis alas ! Too clear; 'tis but the funeral of the former year. " Boy does that ever ring true as we age   lol .

Thanks for the info Kaynight, sounds very interesting.

Saw an interesting item from Philosopher Chuang-Tzu: " Once upon a time Chuang Chou dreamt that he was a butterfly, fluttering happily like a butterfly. He was conscious only of his happiness as a butterfly, unaware that he was Chuang Chou. Suddenly he awakened, and there he was, veritably Chuang Chou himself. Now he does not know whether the butterfly is a dream of Chuang Chou or if Chuang Chou is a dream of the butterfly. " ( are we living a dream or are we living in a dream ? ).

Time for a cute little item: An old man visited his solicitor to make a will " What exactly do I have to do ? " asked the old gent. " Its perfectly straightforward " replied the solicitor, " Just answer a few questions and then leave it all to me. " The old man looked worried. He then said " I Do quite like you but I was planning to leave some of it to my wife. "
