I think if you understand it and would be able to replicate the position if needed then memorizing is unnecessary.
Right, the process of questioning, studying, and all should help your game. I like to pick some of it apart really detailed and some I just kind go through. How far along are you? I think the trap section was kinda lame, but I liked the pawn king endgames as well as some of the mating moves.
