I think the more convinient way to do it is to show numbers in the top left corner for whites and buttom right corner for blacks as there can be more than 1 chessman attacking a given field.

I'm looking for a chess GUI that can highlight all the current attacked squares, I think this visual help will help me spot patterns quickly. I used paint to show what I mean. I have arena chess GUI but it just shows the attacked pieces.
