Could someone please explain how to play against the Scotch Game

That is usually how I play. But these days I am not getting such good positions from it. Could someone please suggest how to play the Scotch Game for Black.

I am a mostly defensive player who is fine with open positions but prefers closed.

I was played the same position in tournament got draw! I only play simple moves & that's all.

Thanks but what I mean is the following:

Is playing Bc5 ok? I know that later on White has some D4..C3 ideas

Avatar of superchessmachine

Should I even take the pawn?

Avatar of superchessmachine

I don't understand what you mean... could you please explain again? With a diagram?

Avatar of superchessmachine

Oh. That is not what I mean. I meant exd4.

Avatar of superchessmachine

So I should do that?

Then what do you recommend after the following position for black

How is that possible?

I think that 3...exd4 is generally approved, and 4...Nf6 is the most popular choice. 4...Bc5 has also been suggested, but, if I remember correctly, some writers warn of potential trouble for Black.
