We all know chess fifty years ago also was politics.A pride of former USSR,beside free health care,romantic litterature and general development from analphabetic agricultural to enlightened industrial society.The flip side,with supression and persecution of individuals also are well known.
Growing up in Denmark in middle of last centrury my impression of the eastern block was not that bad - keen scientists,hard working people in factories and collective farms.But as child I also remember my father mending his military gun at the kitchen table under the Cuba crisis 1962.
Seen in rear view mirror,my most memorable chess experience was playing simultaneous against Mark Taimanov in 1970,I think.He visited my home town,won 24 of 25,the last game a draw against a former national team player,as far as I remember.The russians were invincible.
