Chess in Japan

It's hard for me to understand why Japan's Chess is so weak, not one single grandmaster, being a country that is so advanced in many other aspects, why is Chess so underdeveloped? Any signs that this could change in the future?

Chess takes a HUGE backseat to Shogi.

Thanks, that helped, a little...

The game "GO" is much bigger in Japan. It's a strategic game like chess.

I know Jeremy Silman lives there, I wonder if he tries to promote the game somehow. It would be nice if one of these days he could post a article about the situation of Chess in Japan here on Chess.com

What RedGirlZ said makes a lot of sense.

Japan's chess association JCA is the largest cause of it.

JCA is often selected as a worst association of all sports and games.

We must pay money by myself to play in tournament abroad.

Interesting question OP, I never thought on it. Doing the fact that GO is such a complex game we should expect that a lot of Japanese would get attracted to the “easier” chess too. GM Larry Kaufman is very good in both games.

Go and Shogi would have a lot to do with it. Esp. Go.

Japan has their own strong board game culture that's why...

I bet Hikaru would be more comfortable of being an American identity instead of being in Japan as Japanese.

It seems that Japanese people have more important things to do than playing chess)

Honestly, I was also wondered why there is no any strong grandmaster. I never heard of GM from Japan with 2600 or 2700 rating in classical chess.
