Has anyone seen a movie or read a book (Not a biography) that is about chess (like Searching for Bobby Fisher). Or a movie with an intense chess game? Please share the movies or books that you've seen or heard about.

I read "The art of defense in chess" by Soltis, some years ago. I liked it. It was fun. Other than that, I've only read openings books, and biographies with games. Oh! And a book on a famous chess tounament.

I haven't seen it myself, but there is a movie titled "Chess Fever".  It is a black & white film, very old, but I have heard pretty good things about.  And besides the quality of it as cinema the real Capablanca is in it alongside some other GMs.

I once watched (suffered through) a flick called "Knight Moves" starring Christopher Lambert.  He plays a grandmaster accused of murder. Of course he's innocent! This so-called "grandmaster" even gets excited beating a computer program...this is a real waste of time. What it really needed was a few swords and Sean Connery; oh wait, that's already been made as well!

A book called The Kings Of Chess. And I know a lot of the kids in that book.

The Kings of New York is a great book (although it may just be that I go to a lot of the tournaments they talk about, and follow a couple of the players they profile). Parts of the book get you really excited to play chess, while others make you wonder why you bother. Just what such a book should do!

Also, there this. I'm just 14 pages in, so I can't say much about how good it is, but it seems worthwhile. As the title promises, it's an anthropological look at the game of chess. Best of all, you can (legally) read it online.

King's Gambit: Father and Son and the World's most dangerous game is a wonderful book about chess.  Science writer gets back into the game.  Meets Kasparov and a few other top names.  Is the 'second' to the Canadian champion in Libya -- and gets harassed by agents.  Plays Kirsan Ilyumzhinov at one point.  Visits the famed Russian Chess School etc.  You probably won't find a better book that's die-hard chess but accessible to people who just learned the game.

There's also Counterplay which was just released.  A lot weaker than KG, but enjoyable.
