I know of the chess game in '2001: A Space Odyssey' but does any one know of other games in SF and perhaps has a 'kind of' internet with people playing games with other people in other countries? Would love to know... thank you gang.

There's a very good book by Iain Banks called "The Player Of Games". About an earth games expert who takes on an alien at his own chess type game.

In one of the Asimov books,I can't remember which,  he gives the actual moves of a game. A Ruy Lopez I think.

"Pawn to Infinity" is a collection of SF/Fantasy stories mostly concerning chess, edited by Fred Saberhagen. Midnight by the Morphy Watch was my favorite story.

That would be Pebble in the Sky. A 20th century man is accidently thrown into the future where he is mistaken as being mentally retarded. He is used as a guinea pig to test an intelligence enhancing procedure. A little later in the story a game of chess is used to demonstrate how well the procedure worked.

There's a lot more to the story but that's a quick summary of why there is a chess game in the novel. If I remember right it was a Ruy Lopez.

The Final Reflection is a Star Trek novel in which Klingons play their own version of chess.  It's quite good.

Cool. I never tried looking that game up anywhere. I remember trying to play through it a couple times but that was a long time ago. I didn't remember which opening it was or how far the game went in the novel.

There was a not-very-good movie called Around the World Under the Sea, where one character attempted to cheat in a chess game by secretly using a computer for help. He lost anyway. Computers were not very good back then.

I do not remember the name of the novel or short story. There was a chess game that was going to decide some monumental conflict. One player was human and the other may have been an alien. The twist was that the more powerful pieces had razor sharp edges so the contestants had to suffer to use them. It specifically mentioned Ruy Lopez opening
