My trick is always to look more worried as if i am done for ... it usually makes my opponent more confident than he ought to be.
Chess Intimidation

Hehe, sorry Svenstikov... just teasing...
hmpth! *folds arms and sticks up nose.*
:P
I'm still trying to figure out how Lord-svenstikov can "fold" his arms "and then stick them up his nose. I can't do that, without folding them.
If he meant "folds arms and sticks up nose", I want to ask: do you need surgery to remove the arms and sticks you folded up your nose???
just trying to figure this out.
"Sticking up your nose" is an action independent of "folding your arms". I have never, in practice, noticed any kind of bond between the arm and nose that would restrict the movement of that olefactory organ.

I agree with GatoNegro: the best intimidator is when your opponent is so good that he doesn't need to intimidate you =) There's a certain pressure you feel when you face someone like a grandmaster, it feels like you are barely holding on and he is constantly pushing you back. Your pieces have no homes and it's only a matter of time before you die. You become paranoid about all his imaginary threats and then his real threats kill you anyways =)
If you don't know this feeling, play against fritz or some strong computer (not the chess.com live chess computers which kind of stink imo =)) .
At first you think you're doing fine then the computer's move comes out of nowhere, saccing a piece taking full advantage of your last mistake like most humans do not do...I think this is really great learning material because a computer takes advantage of your tactical mistakes every time. Against a similar-rated opponent you might get away with doing something fishy every time.

are you lot 5 or something?

Whenever I play chess against this one kid, he tries to physically intimidate me with threats and insults me. So I dish it back and then some. Since he realizes I am not intimidated, he loses rather quickly because intimidation is his only key to winning.

Bravo, Quaff. I am glad to hear your opinion on poor sportsmanship, and I agree totally. Unfortunately I think that too many of the "game playing" posters may be totally serious about their intimidation tactics. Surely by the time people reach a level of "maturity" where they can play a decent game of chess, they shouldn't need to use schoolyard bullying techniques to win. My hat is off to all the players on the site who show time-honoured, sportsmanlike behaviour.

When you shake your opponent's hand just crush the heck out of it. Giggle whenever your opponent moves and roll your eyes. When you win, crush your opponent's hand again and say "Good "game", if that's what you would call that massacre". Deny everything if confronted by the Tournament Director.

Declare that luck is with you. Roll two 20-sided dice before each move. When you're about to make a big move, say something like 'oh that's brilliant!' when you see what the dice say.
That's how I play internet chess. :D

hahaha brilliant!
Playing over the board; give your opponent that one 'rocky chair' or 'gammy chair' there always seems be in tournament halls. That should annoy the heck out of any chess player!!

Thanks prairie,
I apologise as I rather meekly was mid removal of my original post as I was beginning to have second thoughts as it seemed to stand alone against the other posts.
I had said, something on the lines of:
I will take most of the comments tongue in cheek, as this is the kind of behaviour in chess I deplore.
dont get smart with me.....
