Chess IRL

I mostly play online, but occasionally like to play friends irl (in real life) I play on a simple but tasteful German children’s set. Many of my friends have more opulent board but it is only recently that someone made fun of my set!! ‘ A cardboard board?! Don’t like that’ he said, I said: ‘LEAVE MY HOME AT ONCE!!’ I am fearful that this will happen again! I had previously liked that my board reflected my childlike sense of wonder and lack of skill at the game but now I wonder should I invest in a more serious set? What would you do??

20" vinyl mat with plastic pieces that have a 3 3/4" tall king with a 1 3/4" diameter base. My dad had an unassuming set with some substituted pieces. He played my great grandfather on it. You never know how special a set might be. I respect your cardboard board.
