Chess is a language?

Is chess a language? First, let me begin with the similarities ; Chess and languages both have rules that are mandatory to follow ; In both language and chess, it is up to you to create sentences/moves. These fit to your style, for example, an aggressive move and the use of a certain adjective ; In chess, playing a good or tricky move can cause your opponent to shrink up in their shell and defend passively. Words do this also, it's just how you say them.

This hypothesis is of all the typical school subjects. English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Physical Education, Design Technology, Computing, Spanish, French and German.

What are your opinions on this subject?

I wouldn’t call chess a language, though I would say it tells a story.  White advances boldy in the center, 1.e4.  Black says you can have the center, 1…Nf6; I will lure your pawns forward and then eat them up.  White responds with the timid 2.Nc3, suggesting he doesn’t want a fight, he wants to keep things nice and safe.  Black plays 2…Nxe4, suggesting he in fact doesn’t know how the other pieces move, etc etc.

Chess has a constant flow of ideas, back and forth, but it is not a language, no more than a movie is a language.  It can tell a story, though, and the better the players the more coherent the story becomes.  It doesn’t necessarily mean a better or more exciting story, though.  GMs can have some pretty boring games, and 1200s can produce some error-filled yet magical journeys.

So, not a language, but more than just pieces of wood moving randomly on a grid.

I've had this realisation recently myself. Using Chess for the sole use of competition is limiting ones self. We are in divisive times, but before it got so intense, we had a very long period of everything becoming a competition. I think the wave of reality TV competitions was the final wave. Before that we had endless trivia and game shows. Imagine how different it would be if we used that energy to educate each other instead of competing? Anyway, I digress.

As Bullet6422 said languages have rules. We converse with them by using an opening, a middle point and an end. We communicate through sentences. All sentences end with a full stop. A point where there is no where else to move until you start another sentence. That end point to a stop, is no different to an end game in chess leading to checkmate or stalemate. A game of chess is a sentence. When we look at a paragraph it is similar to a sentence, as in it obeys the same rules. You could say its another interpretation of what a sentence is. You look further back you have page, further back you have a chapter, then a book. Any book can be classified into a series or category. They all obey the start, middle, end rule. Some have said that this universe or plain that we live on has its set of rules. This civilization we live in certain does have rules.

I theorize that chess is a complex symbolic language that can communicate various topics, thoughts, ideas, and even scientific theories.

yes, I totally agree that playing chess and speaking a language have many parallels, fascinating subject
