Chess is a waste of time that achieves nothing.

Now don't tell me to stop playing but its the truth. When you reach a rating like 1800 then you thought you have acquired that skill and you are on that level, you realize that it's a bluff, because eventually your rating falls down. There's a psychological effect that affects you negatively. This is how this website is designed. And its addictive but achieves you nothing except the dopamine that you get when you win. This is only useful for titled players who are able to get money. Worst hobby of all time. Yes I post this because I'm butt hurt losing games. I've reached 1852 but now down to 1700-something, Just when you thought you're on a higher level, you're not. Don't attack me Ad hominem, rebut logically.

I would imagine that if you equate your self-worth with an online rating, i can see how that would effect someone.

I see. Thanks for pointing that out.

Um, how do you think masters became masters?   They were all once 1800.   They practiced a lot then, and so should you.   If you were/are 1800, do you think the same way.

Thanks for this mini motivation.

It isn’t a motivation, it is the truth.   If you don’t like chess, it is a different story.   But u are a good player, so don’t quit, train, play, analyze, repeat.

man, it must suck to suck

The concentration involved keeps the mind sharp. Chess has been shown to help with the development of mathematical skills and the 3rd and 4th dimensions of learning which involve analysis and interpretative abilities.  Old farts like me who play chess are less like to become senile or develop diseases like Alzheimers.

I know right.

Then why are you on a chess site?

There is nothing to rebut or disagree with. For you, chess is a waste of time that achieves nothing. But that's not necessarily the case for others. I think part of the problem is what FishEyed said. You are talking about online chess or online ratings. These things truly do achieve nothing, you are right. I know I'm not good enough, nor will I ever be good enough to take chess seriously. I play for fun, and it's the companionship that I enjoy. I like talking to my playing partner, sharing ideas, talking about our daily events (specifically how bad my dog is and how good my kids are). OK, sometimes that's reversed but you get the idea.

So my sincere advice is to do two things. Stop playing online so much, and instead play real people on a real board with real pieces. The second thing is stop playing period. Take a break, play golf or tennis or workout at the gym instead. Then in a few weeks try playing chess again. It's not good to be obsessed with anything, especially something like a pointless online rating for a board game.

The best advice I can give for you is to not overdo it, and play 1-2 10min+ games a day max & analyze. Bullet chess has caused me to break that rule, but I have so much fun playing bullet I couldn’t care less about that rating.

We are?

May I have some?

"Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make men happy."

Don't reasonably expect that any of those will pay the bills.

I just wanna be good at it. Maybe I just had such unrealistic goals.

Chess is a good pastime and a good ego-booster (sometimes or often: an ego-crusher [check out my last daily game]). It's better to waste time playing chess than waste time doing nothing. One thing I kinda dislike is the maxim or adage that grandmasters or great players who have great imagination are born not made. It may be true. But like you I am butthurt, too.

A tennis player told once that after he got number three in the world he played horribly in the next tournament.

First he didn't understand why.

But then he realised that he got number three by giving everything in every point, staying focus in most part of the match.

After he got number three he thought he reached an important goal and everything would get easier from now on.

He was wrong. He had to go on giving everything in every point.

In chess is the same. You get stronger and had to face stronger opponents. Don't assume that things get easier, they get more difficult. Reaching a certain level doesn't mean much, stay at this level for a while is the new challenge.
