Not really. It's totally boring. It's all memory. My short term memory is really bad which is why I don't excel at chess. My as well just play the memory game with the cards. replace cards with chess pieces. snooze.

Simple explanation really. In order to lose any one thing, in this case, memory of skills obtained. One must first obtain the requisite skills in order to lose memory of them.

Simply not seeing a certain move your opponent has is not memory... lol. Players blunder all the time simply because they were too lazy to do a blunder check, they also blunder because they failed to consider certain moves, etc. What the OP says is that he thinks chess is all about "remembering moves and counter moves" ie rote memory, which is simply not the case.
I got to where I am in chess without memorizing anything and only having a vague idea of how to play queens gambit and Sicilian. chess is fun. I can see how it might be difficult to enjoy it when you're focus with chess is to troll forums. I am at a lost as to why it appears to me as if we are in disagreement when in all actuality I agree with you 100%. Be that as it may, the augmented facts continue to support a sub-conscious state of mind insofar as your mood thus becomes a contingency of whether your performance is better than the time one played the previous game. One other factor however that is relative. It is not certain if an Autistic individual will repeat the same mistakes, or will he continue to recognize the patterns that lead him to fantastic wins in the past.
