Chess is NOT a sport!!!

cheater_1, methinks you have chosen just those definitions of sport that serve your argument. A more objective observer ,like myself for instance, looked up sport in two dictionaries I have at my finger tips. First I consulted the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and found the first entry as follows: sport n. (15c) 1. a :
a source of diversion : recreation ; b : sexual play ; c (1) physical activity engaged in for pleasure. I also consulted Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary and found as the First definition: sport, n. 1, any activity or experience that gives enjoyment and or recreation; pastime; diversion. Notice the qualifier "any" . Certainly, sport does not by definition require physical activity, but may include it. So, I suggest you be a good sport, (yet another definition of the word!) and resign your position( in this case, argument). Don't make me go to the OED! And thank you for your interesting and fiery argument!

PIRATEDOG, finally, a legitimate debator. Thank you. First off, I look down on people who argue that "my dictionary is better than your dictionary", or "my online dictionary is better than yours". Please refrain from that method of arguing--it is amateuristic.
Second, allow me to CLARIFY a few things for you and all the dictionary greenhorns out there. When a dictionary states defintions and puts them down, 1,2,3 etc. it DOES NOT mean that the first defintion is BETTER than the forth, it only means there are different SENSES of the word being defined. Definition 1 is in NO WAY better or more popular or holds more value than definition 7.
Now, the first definition that YOU site (I love using people's OWN weapons to destroy them) is "a source of diversion : recreation " that is one SENSE of the word. It does NOT mean that any source of a diversion is a sport. COME ON, I get diverted by watching hummingbirds in my backyard, are you going to tell me that I am engaged in a sport? I get diverted by watching young blond girls in short shorts and halter tops, is girl watching a sport? Jeez, I think you'd consider ANYTHING a sport! Also, "b : sexual play" is not the SENSE of the word that we are looking for (we're not talking about sex after all) so it is disregarded.
The SENSE of the word that we are looking for just happens to be what you cited: c (1) physical activity engaged in for pleasure. I trust I have made my point.
Now, the American Heritage DIctionary (no more or less reputable that any other dictionary on the planet) does not have the word "any" as your defintion did (did you just add that word, hmmmmmm?), "A specific diversion involving physical exercise and having a set form and body of rules; game." Is my dictionary's defintion better than yours? Hmmmmmmmm?
What is lost on ALL OF YOU DUNDERHEADS is the actual definition of chess. Once again, I ASK ANYONE to post a definition of chess from a CREDIBLE source that calls it a SPORT. I have yet to see a link posted that defines chess as a sport. Please, someone post it so that I can have FUN and rip it to shreds. It won't stand up against my battery of LOGIC and COMMONSENSE. The truth is on my side, people...I cannot be defeated.
Here is a tidbit for you all to ponder. The ASK OXFORD website, the FREE VERSION of the Oxford dictionary (yes it's run by the same people who run oed.com) defines chess as: • noun a board game for two players, the object of which is to put the opponent’s king under a direct attack, leading to checkmate. http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/chess?view=uk
If you people view board games as sports, what's next, the SPORT of MONOPOLY? GET A GRIP.
