Chess is NOT a sport!!!

there is simply no definition of sport that recognizes chess as a non-sport and recognizes an actual sport as a sport by definition.
and there is no definition that recognizes all things u see as a sport and doesn't include something entirely obsurd that would definitely not be a sport.

Was workign towards that all along... but then I kept getting distracted by the idea of ordering some pizza. mmmm pizza.
Victory slices all around

Fredrick, I see now the twisted nature my posts have become.
I have from the beginning (in my opinion) simply argued against sports needing to be physical in nature. Well more importantly I don't believe that is the defining characteristic of a sport. The fact that you believe that chess would be a sport if people had to run non stop while playing is quite simply, silly.
I'm sorry if my what ifs were lost on you. I'll explain what they were meant to expose. Please ask yourself how logical a definition you have for sport if chess becomes one as soon as the players have to be running on the spot while playing but is JUST a game if played without this silly constraint.
Does Nascar cease being a sport if cars were controlled by our minds?
I am sorry IF that was lost on you.
I think this is an excellent example of the flawed nature of this definition.
if we simply forced our selves to run constantly while trying to make a move it would fit the definition of sport. clearly its the definition that needs to be changed, not chess. why they dont change it is probably because they would have to except other "games" as a sport, poker for example, but i dont think it is a problem at all.

Don't do you think we r doing a lot of harm on the chess community.

Chess is a competitive activity which requires skill to win.
Reduces fat in the process, which makes it as effective as a physical sport too

Also, darts, snooker, motor racing are now all 'sports'. Are they really 'physical' sports?
Clearly, the semantics of the word sport has moved on, and modern useage of the word sport now covers non-physical sports as well.
To add clarity though, board games ought to be classified as mind sports.
The 1st International Mind Sports will be held in Beijing in parallel with the Olympics this year, organised by the IMSO (International Mind Sports Organisation)
13th-18th Oct 2008 {Chess, Bridge, Draughts, Go, Chinese Chess}

Grrr, just reread some of my posts and realised I'd progressively been getting in a bad mood today the closer it was getting to me having to go back into work.
I tried earlier in this thread ot post personal definitons of a sport by posting roughly what my flatmate and I agreed upon. (Interestingly this included physical ability)
Personally I believe there should be a collective noun for activities like debating and chess. Mind games I'm not a fan of because of the games vs sports debate.
While 'game' and 'sport' can often be interchanged, limiting something to JUST game, makes it sound childish, and some how less important.
Also the more I think about what sport actually means the less I find it needs to be confined to just the physical realm.
Is chess a sport? well thats just a semantic arguement.
