Chess is not about intelligence

Chess is more about the art of managing vast quantities of abstract information than it is about intelligence. Why else would people like Dr. Can & James Stripes get so much business?

Everyone has different intellectual strengths and weaknesses (i.e. spacial awareness, emotional intelligence, book smart, social intelligence). I think that chess definitely does correlate to being “smart”, but some people may define “smart” differently. It takes a high level of thinking to play chess, or at least GOOD chess, as you are forced to think a few moves ahead and such. While knowing what the Peloponnesian War is might not help you checkmate your opponent, having the mental capacity to both study and play well at the game will have a dramatic effect on how well you play.
