How many doctor offices in your area are called "The Such-n-such Medial Arts Building"? Now how many are called the "So-n-so Neurological Hobby & Comics"?

Well, I can only do brain surgery on weekends, out back in my garage. So it's really just more of a hobby for me.

Hey!

Just because I drowned my poor mother in a bathtub full of milk and Fruit Loops doesn't make me a cereal killer!

chess is an art. gardening is an art. Picking your nose is an art. And don't forget the art of farting. Being an art isn't really such a big deal nowadays.

Is chess a fine art... no.

regarding the first page of this thread, right brain/left brain is psuedoscience and people can imagine anything that is physically possible, so that connection between chess and music is pretty weak.

Chess doesn't really imitate life. how can your relay an emotion through a chess game (without annotations saying, "I was eager...")Another difference between an art and a game is rules. Chess has rules, where if you break them, it's not chess anymore. What artform has rules? Name one, anybody.

Well, you have to paint something for it to be a painting.

Chess is an art as long as you can breathe life into it. Whether or not your work of art is a good one, well...and can't some concepts/pursuits be both art and science? Isn't the universe in a sense a work of art?

psyduck

yeah, but there's the rules on how to paint.

psyduck

like, i wouldn't consider that a rule so much as a definition.

If there is a creative stage within something, then it is art.

art is free thinking...

it is expression...

feeling...

when I play chess, i do get a feeling of being in control...

the game itself, become an imaginary canvas, where you can march your troops on plains of understanding...

at the end, if you had it your way, you might look back on the game, and see the beauty of what had happened...

the game can be frozen in time, and kept on paper...for many years...

thoughts can be sculpted this way...

imagination will prove many things... art is pure expression.

one can even see emotion in a game, also, one can feel an opponents strength in a game..it is definitely art.

When I think of art-making, I generally think of activity where one's stream of consciousness is evident in the artwork, and where creativity is appreciated more than compliance with rules and expectations, neither of which I feel applies to chess very much. In other words, I don't feel like I have that much freedom to create when creativity at the expense of tactical awareness can be punished so immediately and severely.
